Artificial intelligence in EU regulations

The European Centre for Parliamentary Research and Documentation has published information on the regulation of artificial intelligence. The proposed legal framework focuses on the specific use of AI and the risks associated with it. The European Commission, which is responsible for the project, proposes to establish a technology-neutral definition of AI in EU law and to establish a classification of AI-based systems with different requirements and obligations adapted to the so-called risk-based approach.

Under the regulation, AI-based systems posing unacceptable risks would be banned. High-risk AI would be allowed, but would have to meet a number of requirements beforehand. Conversely, AI-based solutions posing only low or minimal risk would be subject to less stringent regulations.

However, experts from the digital sector are calling for a number of amendments to the draft, including revising the definition of AI, expanding the list of banned AI-based systems, strengthening mechanisms for establishing, defending and redressing claims, and ensuring democratic oversight of the design and implementation of EU AI regulations.
