Clearview AI fined €5.2m by CNIL for non-compliance with regulations

The French data protection authority (CNIL) has fined Clearview AI Inc. €5.2 million. The penalty is related to Clearview AI’s disregard of a compliance order issued by the CNIL on 17 October 2022. The company was also ordered to stop collecting and processing individuals’ data in France without a legal basis.
Despite a two-month deadline to demonstrate compliance, Clearview AI failed to provide any evidence of appropriate action within the time limit. As a result, CNIL decided to impose a fine due to the company’s non-compliance.

The incident is part of a wider trend in Europe of stricter enforcement of data protection rules against companies, especially those involved in artificial intelligence and data analytics.
