Fraudsters impersonating PGE arrested by police

31 May 2022 Police Headquarters has announced the detention of two men suspected of impersonating an energy supplier to defraud of login details, credit cards, passwords, and funds. The services caught the fraudsters red-handed in one of the hotels in Opole. In the first half of May, the criminals were to send out over a million SMSes informing that electricity would be disconnected unless the recipient paid outstanding bills. In this way they managed to extort over fifty-two thousand zlotys. The scammers’ modus operandi was standard – pretending to be Polska Grupa Energetyczna they sent an SMS with a link to a fake website imitating a bank. The login details were intercepted and then used to steal funds from bank accounts. Police say they have tracked down and detained fourteen suspected online fraudsters in 2022 alone. All face up to 10 years in prison.
