The UK supervisory authority (ICO) has made recommendations on the protection of personal health data. These are related to the increased booster vaccination campaign. The recommendations provide advice and practical examples on how to manage information about vaccination status. The ICO stresses that before verifying a vaccination certificate, it is important to inform the person being checked of what will happen to their data. This is because the nature of the check can vary – it is often limited to just inspection, but there are also applications that allow the scanning of QR codes containing the certificate identifier and information about the holder. The latter results in the collection of data and, from a security perspective, poses a greater risk of a breach.
