The European Cyber Security Agency (ENISA) published its first report on cyber threats in the healthcare sector on 5 July 2023. The document provides a comprehensive analysis of cyber attacks, identifying the main threats, perpetrators, impact and trends observed over the past two years.
The report found that one of the main threats to the health sector is ransomware, which accounted for a staggering 54% of identified incidents. According to the report’s findings, the most commonly attacked assets were patient data. Almost half of all incidents were aimed at stealing or leaking the data of healthcare organisations. This is a worrying trend, highlighting the need to strengthen cybersecurity in the healthcare sector worldwide.
