£27m fine threatens TikTok for failing to protect children’s privacy

The UK’s supervisory authority (ICO) has announced that it intends to fine TikTok Inc and TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited for failing to protect children’s privacy. Following an investigation, the ICO found that TikTok may have: processed the data of children under the age of 13 without proper parental consent; and processed sensitive data without a legal basis. In addition, according to the ICO, TikTok failed to provide its users with adequate information about the processing of their personal data in a concise, transparent and easily understandable manner.

TikTok could be fined £27 million, although a final decision has not yet been made. TikTok may now refer to the authority’s findings.
