The Croatian supervisory authority has issued its opinion on the monitoring of drivers

The Croatian Personal Data Protection Agency (AZOP) presented its position on the possibility of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Croatia to record the speed of vehicles by means of video surveillance cameras.
AZOP pointed out that the Ministry of Interior is mandated to prevent and eliminate threats and sanction violations of traffic regulations. The authority referred to Article 283 of the Road Traffic Safety Act, which states, among other things, how the speed of a vehicle is determined by means of devices for measuring vehicle speed, technical devices, tachograph records or direct vehicle monitoring. AZOP stressed that prior to the installation of the video monitoring system on the public roads, the ministry analysed and identified the locations where most accidents mainly caused by speeding occur. Based on the results of this analysis, the implementation of the monitoring system was carried out.
The video surveillance camera system serves the legitimate purpose of protecting persons and property and protecting against threats to public safety. It aims to ensure safety through general prevention and makes all citizens aware of the need to comply with traffic regulations in order to reduce accidents.
